Refugee Resource's Statement on Afghanistan
We, at Refugee Resource, are deeply saddened by the crisis occurring in the beautiful country of Afghanistan. The resurgence of the Taliban threatens the peace and livelihood of all who live there. As the Afghan people make the often-devastating decision to leave their homes to find freedom and safety, we stand by them. We welcome them to Oxfordshire and call our vibrant and accepting community to do the same.
We also stand with refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants already in Oxfordshire – particularly those from Afghanistan. It is impossible to imagine how hard this time is for them as they worry for their family and friends who remain.
Our work responds directly to severe emotional and psychological trauma that comes as a result of these hardships, the journeys undertaken to seek safety, and the difficult positions many people are placed in when they arrive in an unfamiliar country. At this time, it is important to draw attention to the pain that is being felt by our existing refugee communities. This devastating events in Afghanistan will be retriggering for many, as they see and hear about experiences similar to their own.
We want to reassure our community at this time that we are here to help and provide support. From the 13th of September we will be re-opening our doors, and partially reopening the drop-in element of our service. The doors will be open from 10:30am – 3pm on Mondays and Thursday. You can also reach us during office hours by phone and email now.
We invite the people of Oxford to join with us and the various other agencies who work with refugees. All organisations are currently accepting donations to assist their vital work.
